Rocky Sandoval wants listeners to hear the person behind the performance. The Tacoma R&B artist describes emotional honesty as the thread connecting his songwriting, live shows and plans for his next creative chapter.
In written responses supplied to Variety Press, Sandoval explains that confidence and vulnerability can exist together. A song does not need to present its author as someone with every answer. Sometimes its strength comes from acknowledging a mistake or making room for uncertainty.
“Sometimes confidence is admitting you were wrong, admitting you’re hurting, admitting you’re trying to grow,” he says.
Accountability as a writing perspective
Sandoval identifies accountability, redemption and resilience as recurring themes in his work. He describes writing as a way to process experiences, reflect on his own decisions and turn difficult emotions into something that may be meaningful to another person.
“ITS MY FAULT” is a record he returns to when discussing that approach. In his telling, the song’s personal perspective gives listeners a place to recognize their own regrets and lessons. The aim is a connection that reaches beyond the details of the artist’s individual story.
That emphasis on emotional detail is informed by the qualities he admires in 1990s R&B: patience, storytelling and vocal conviction. Sandoval values songs that allow a feeling to unfold, giving the listener time to sit with it.
Expanding the sound without losing the voice
His musical outlook also leaves room for movement and warmth. Discussing “All To Myself,” Sandoval describes bringing Afrobeats and dancehall influences into a sound shaped by R&B, hip-hop, soul and the music he heard growing up.
The change in rhythmic setting does not erase the emotional focus. He sees it as another way of expressing himself, reflecting a freer creative space while maintaining the identity listeners associate with his work.
Sandoval is also developing a more cinematic approach to visuals. He wants imagery to carry emotion, tension and atmosphere, connecting the music to a broader experience rather than treating a video as a separate promotional requirement.
The human connection of performing
Live performance remains central to how Sandoval understands that experience. He describes the stage as a place where listeners can encounter the passion and commitment behind the recordings directly.
Years of persistence are part of what he wants an audience to feel. Growing up in Tacoma and creating in the Pacific Northwest taught him, he says, to build with available resources and continue working without expecting the infrastructure of a larger music market.
After more than two decades in music, he places increasing value on sustainability, ownership and lasting relationships with listeners. Those priorities inform the legacy he hopes to leave: music that continues to connect, and an example of perseverance for younger artists building their own paths.
“Most importantly, I want the music to outlive me,” Sandoval says. “I want people to still feel something years later when they hear these songs.”
